Bodegas Ostatu Rioja Blanco 2024 (Rioja, Spain)
Historically Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains, was only a pass-through for travelers. This 250 year old winery in fact took its name from the Basque word for “inn.” But the chalky clay soils and cool climate here make a perfect permanent home for grapes like Viura and Malvasia, as found in this roundly crisp white blend.
Using only indigenous yeasts and stainless steel during fermentation ensures that the Viura retains its bright acidity, while the weighty minerality of Malvasia grounds the palate. We get notes of orange blossom on the nose, with apple and stone fruit on the palate. A lovely minerality and almost nuttiness on the finish make this a terrifically versatile wine for food.
Food Ideas: shakshouka, baked salmon w/wild rice & nut pilaf, spicy cod roe pasta, cheese plates and tapas of all kinds
Alcohol: 13%
