For anyone who assumes winemakers must be stuffy snobby connoisseur types, we present to you Birichino. A California winemaking duo who sources their fruit from the little guys often overlooked in the hustle for cheap bulk juice. Like this Rhone blend of mostly old vine Carignan and Grenache, with a touch of Mourvedre, from the glamorous fields of Lodi.
Aware of the uphill battle which they’ve embarked upon, the duo named this wine after a dragon-like sea monster from The Odyssey. Dramatic? Perhaps. But an evocative metaphor for the dangers that await intrepid travelers on the high seas of California winemaking, for sure.
Using spontaneous native yeast fermentation and neutral barrels to vinify the juice, it’s then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Or as Birichino puts it “all Scylla, no fylla.”
