Jose Antonio Garcia 'Unculin' Mencia 2021 (Bierzo, Spain)
The Mencia grape can make an aromatic, fresh, mineral-driven red wine, in the right hands. The Garcia couple, both with deep roots in the Bierzo region, worked hard (by hand) to bring these old vines back to life, for just such a purpose.
Their low-intervention winemaking techniques allow Mencia’s natural juicy dark berry fruit to shine on the palate, with purple flowers and herbs on the nose. Crushed gravel minerality and balanced tannins finish. Don’t be fooled by its buoyant nature, this wine can age and loves air.
Food Ideas: chorizo and mussels paella, turkey (esp. the dark meats), red beans and rice (with or w/o andouille), roasted glazed turnips/rutabaga
