Winzerin Wiederstein 'Ein Traum' Red Blend Gottlesbrunn, Austria 2019
The name of this southern Austrian red blend means “a dream”, and we couldn’t agree more. The limestone-clay soil of the Carnuntum wine region where winemaker Birgit Wiederstein tends her vines are remarkably similar in makeup to those of the Bourgogne, and this delicious blend follows through on that promise.
We get a deceptively rich bouquet of plum, baking spices, and carob. However, the wine is surprisingly smooth on the palate, with faint tannins, bright acid and loads of fruit. The Pinot Noir gives cherry, cranberry, and a spectrum of white mushrooms. The traditionally peppery Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch lend not just pink peppercorn, but licorice root as well as crushed kashmiri pepper. We like this one with a slight chill on it: either 15 minutes in the fridge, or 20 minutes out of it.
Food: Kung Pao chicken, Persian rice, seared tuna, Salt and pepper tofu, carpaccio
