Azienda Franchino Nebbiolo Piedmont (Gattinara), Italy 2015Regular price $45.00
In a side-by-side we doubt that most folks would recognize this as a Nebbiolo. Its character is so far from the robust wines we’re used to from south of here in the Langhe. But up in the Gattinara region, where the grape even has its own regional name (Spanna), the varietal has a wild quality to it. Helped along by an old-school winemaker like this one, who has always done things so traditionally (aka manually) he has no need for a certificate of organic agriculture. He wouldn’t know how to do it any other way!
This is a lean, sparse version of Nebbiolo, with the precision of iron and salt hiding beneath a bouquet of wild berries and herbs. If you're looking for a wine to cellar for 10-15 years, you've found a good one. If you decide to drink now, be prepared to drink over 5-9 days or do some decanting for best results.
Food Ideas: creamy pasta dishes, potato and cheese soup, smoked ham, roasted game w/berries and rosemary, taleggio and funky soft cheeses!
