Cantina del Morellino 'Cala Civetta' Ciliegiolo 2021 (Tuscany, Italy)
Believed to be a parent to Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo (which translates to “little cherry,” a name befitting both the adorably sized grapes and the red fruit notes on the palate) is an incredibly versatile, crowd-pleasing varietal. A medium bodied red wine that can take a chill, but perhaps make a bit more of a statement at the dinner table, this is a wine that is as spectacular alone in the glass as it is alongside a good meal.
Wild strawberries and violets on the nose lead into a bright and juicy palate of ripe cherry, wild berries, and a burst of spice. Soft tannic structure and well balanced acidity make for a lean and clean wine, with an energetic mouthfeel and a soft, pleasant finish.
