Cave de Donnas Classico Rosso Picotendro (Nebbiolo) 2019 (Valle d'Aosta, Italy)
That this wine gets made feels miraculous to us. Made from Nebbiolo grapes growing out of sheer quartz and granite cliffs up in the Italian Alps, we’re convinced they must employ mountain goats during harvest. Donnas is the first region one encounters when entering the Valle d’Aoste, clustered around the Dora Baltea river, boasting its own dialect and wine cooperative. Most of the wine made here is sold directly to the abundant motor tourists that frequent the area, with only a fraction making it to the outside world.
This high-altitude fruit is grown in pergola trellises, reaching for every drop of mountain sunshine it can. Aged 2 years in Slavonian oak barrels and bottled unfiltered, it comes to us ready to enjoy. You can taste the precise sunlight and clear air up here, in this lean, garnet-colored Nebbiolo blend. Tense red fruits and a spicy minerality fill out the alpine palate.
Food Ideas: rabbit sugo, tomato and shrimp soup, fondue, braised game, charcuterie boards
