Domaine Bousquet 'Tupungato' Malbec 2024 (Mendoza, Argentina)
This French winemaker, on a vacation back in the 90s, stumbled on this mountain vineyard and immediately fell in love. Having long been searching for a unique terroir to continue his family's winemaking tradition, the Gualtallary Valley near the Chile border enamored him with its desert alluvial soils, high-altitude (the highest vineyard in Argentina) chilly temperatures, proximity to the searing sun, and absence of any infrastructure like electricity or irrigation...(SHRUG) they're a strange breed, these winemakers.
All of these factors however lend a tension to this Malbec that makes it stand out from its compatriots. With cassis and violet on the nose, the palate is plush with blackberry, currant, and plum. Lean acidity balance the ample tannins (give about 30 min. of air) for an elegant finish. All from organically grown fruit!
