Klaus Lentsch 'Bachgart' Blauburgunder 2017 (Alto Adige, Italy)
Klaus Lentsch is a small producer hailing from a long line of winegrowers. In 2008 he purchased a farm in Capodazzo, where he farms his vines sustainably, and prefers keeping his yields low to create high quality wines. Among other varietals, Klaus concentrates on Pinot Nero, aka Pinot Noir, also known locally as Blauburgunder, an uncommon grape in the region that he believes has real potential, and we are inclined to agree!
Although similar in style to a Burgundy Pinot Noir, the alpine terroir comes out to play in this wine. The clay and gravelly soils with some volcanic stratification imparts a soft palate with fresh berries, crushed rocks, and a subtle smokey note. With the fresh forestry nose and finely-spiced but easy-going tannins, this wine is autumnal and food friendly.
Food Pairings: Smoked turkey and swiss cheese panini, hazelnut crusted halibut, roasted delicata squash with pomegranate and arugula
ABV: 13.5%
