Perrini Negroamaro Puglia (Salento), Italy 2020
Negroamaro, whose name translates to "black and bitter," is native to this region of Southern Italy, Salento, known as the heel of the boot. Where it is generally expected to be a fairly rustic wine, full-bodied with an earthy bitterness, in the hands of the Perrini siblings it's a bit different. The pair converted their family vineyards to organic agriculture back in the '90s and built an underground cellar to allow their grapes to ferment naturally in the cool temperatures.
From 35-year old vines, grown on sandy limestone soils, the Perrini version of the grape is more fresh and playful, savory rather than stewy-fruited. Still with that characteristic pip in the finish, this wine will balance full flavors and rich textures in your dishes.
Food Ideas: clam pizza, eggplant parmesan, Farmer's Market veggie stew, red beans & rice, Indian food
