Portal da Calcada Red Douro Portugal 2016
This blend of sustainably grown indigenous Portuguese varietals comes from the higher altitude vineyards northwest of Oporto called Amarante. Old vines planted here have a slightly cooler climate than the sun-baked Douro valley, giving us a more textured rendition of these grapes.
We get lots of dark black fruit and a bit of spiciness on the nose followed by a plump palate of blackberries, earthy spice, and just the right amount of acidity. Give it a few swirls in the glass and it’s good to go.
Food Ideas: Shish kebabs, moussaka, black bean quesadilla, grilled sardines, Portuguese chicken with mussels and clams
