Domaine Philemon 'La Croix d'Azal' Braucol Gaillac, France 2019
Coming to us from a 20 hectare, certified organic vineyard operated by the Vieules family since 1804, the ‘Croix d’Azal’ is a wonderful expression of Braucol- the named used in Gaillac for the Fer Servadou grape.

On the nose, we get earthy spice, herbs, and dark plum. On the palate, we get more of the same with dark berry fruit, black pepper, fennel seed, good acidity and minerality. Give 20-30 minutes to calm the tannins.

You’ll probably recognize this producer’s aesthetic once you see the bottle, or when you taste the wine for that matter! We carry several other Dom. Philemon wines, an organic family farm in Southwest France that specializes in indigenous varietals, low-intervention winemaking, and whose labels could be used as wine Scrabble tiles. 

This 100% Duras is historically one of our favorites, though it hasn’t been seen in the states for several years. Tasting it again was like running into an old friend: violets, Mediterranean herbs like sage and fennel, robust berry fruit and a peppery finish. We promise, you’ve never had anything quite like it. 

Domaine Philemon Jurancon Noir Cotes du Tarn, France 2019
Here in sunny Gaillac, cooled by Mediterranean breezes, is perhaps the only place Jurancon Noir can properly ripen. A cross between Folle Blanche and Côt (AKA Malbec), it’s a rambunctious vine, sensitive to temperature and requiring strident pruning. 

At Domaine Philemon, also a working organic farm, they understand their plants well. So we’re rewarded with perfectly ripened dark, spicy fruit, a perfume of dried purple flowers and wet earth. The palate has a gentle minerality and a touch of pip, making a great food wine.
