Vino Vi & Co. 'Ona' 3-Pack
What could possibly be "local" about this wine, you ask? I mean, it says Penedes on the label even! This delicious Spanish white is the product of a collaboration between legendary Cava producer (Can Tutusaus) and one of our favorite importers, based out of Detroit! Some of you may have even met Nuria (of Vinovi & Co) at one of our tastings, as this native Barcelonan now resides in the Mitten, bringing unique Spanish wines to our neighborhoods.
This lovely white is made from the Xarel-lo grape, usually used in the production of Cava, grown at high altitude in the Penedes region (just West of Barcelona). And what have we come to know about high-altitude wines? Acidity! Full of fleshy orchard fruits with a richly aromatic nose, this wine finishes clean and bright thanks to that crisp acidity.
Marselan is an interesting hybrid varietal, a cross between Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. While originally developed in France in 1961, the varietal has made a happy home in the mediterranean climate of Penedes. The grapes for this wine are hand harvested from Raimon Badell's estate in mountainous Alt Penedès, within the national protected area of the Massís del Garraf.
Ripe and gulpable with elegant structure, this is an incredibly balanced red wine. Vibrant cherry notes provide ample acidity, while brambly berry notes offer a silky texture. The tannins, while very fine, could use a bit of air, perhaps 30-45 minutes.
Winemaker Blai Ferré’s has just about 12 acres of land from which he produces just 5,000 bottles of the this Priorat per year. This wine is also quite special because it’s a collaboration with Núria Garrote-i-Esteve, founder and owner of Vino Vi & Co, a fantastic importer of Spanish wines. Ona is Catalan for sea wave, and is also the name of Nuria’s daughter, who “designed” the label.
This blend of Garnatxa, Syrah, Carinyena is aged in stainless steel, which gives it a remarkable freshness. Notes of ripe cherry and plum are met with a subtle smokiness, spice, and a pleasant minerality on the finish. Drink it now, or lay it down for 5-10 years.Food Ideas: Beef heart skewers (or anything from this weekend’s Loomi Cart menu- take a bottle with you!), steak frites, mujadara, BBQ shrimp
