Zoppi Cristina Grignolino d'Asti 2019 (Piemonte, Italy)
Cristina Zoppi began working on her husband's family vineyard while on maternity leave in 2004. Originally only planning to spend a few months tending to the grapes along with her newborn, instead she discovered a passion for organic farming, taking a special interest in off-beat grapes of the Piedmont region. By 2017, she had become so attached to the vineyard that she "couldn't bear to sell the grapes off anymore" and began making wine with the help of enologist Cristiano Garella.
This wine is 100% Grignolino, a delightfully grippy light bodied red. The name of the grape is derived from the Italian word "grignole" which means "many pips", the excessive presence of seeds in these grapes results in a wine with a strong tannin. The unique marine sand and limestone soils at Zoppi gives this Grignolino a lovely floral and subtly fruity nose, as well as good tension in the mouth. Rustic but still elegant, with notes of tart rhubarb and earthy dried sage on the palate.
