Verdier-Logel 'Les Gourmets' Gamay Cotes du Forez 2022 (Loire Valley, France)
Verdier-Logel delivers lovely Gamay out of the tiny appellation of Cote du Forez (located on the southern tip of the Loire). This obscure micro-region has a notoriously difficult climate for grape-growing, but treasured granitic soils that Gamay happens to love. In this distinct set of circumstances we get the best of both worlds for this varietal--the bright and bouyant fruit we know from a Beaujolais, with structure and spice from the Loire.
The Cuvee des Gourmets presents with black currant and red plum fruit, pretty botanical notes (like juniper berry), and a unique peanut shell aroma. A nice earthy spice and light tannins alongside textured acidity. Best drunk at cellar temperature with a bit of air.
Food Ideas: funky washed rind cheeses, tempeh Reuben w/sauerkraut, Provencal herb-crusted chicken thighs, pesto spaghetti squash "noodles"
