Left Foot Charley Blaufrankisch 2021 (Old Mission Peninsula, Michigan)
Left Foot Charley, founded in 2004 by owner/winemaker Bryan Ulbrich, has done a fabulous job working with small family owned Michigan vineyards to create award winning whites and reds, most of which are dry. Blaufrankisch, generally thought of as an Austrian grape though it originated in Slovenia, is finding a comfortable home in our Michigan climate. Being a late-ripening varietal it gets extra time to soak up every little bit of sunshine the pinky of The Mitten has to offer.
On the nose we get earth, red currants, and dark plum. The palate brings more of the same with a stony minerality and balanced acidity. Think of all the things you love about a Pinot Noir, then add a purple-y spicy base note, and you've met your new wine friend: Blaufrankisch.
Food Ideas: Seared pork tenderloin with cipollini onions agro dolce, roasted brussel sprouts, mushroom bisque, marinated beet and goat cheese salad.
