Grochau Cellars Trousseau/Pinot Noir 2022 (Willamette Valley, Oregon)
Trousseau is another new varietal for GC Wines; interestingly they call this grape “Bastardo” in Portugal. The Trousseau comes from Pamar Vineyard in the Van Duzer Corridor, a site developed by longtime vineyard partners Mark and Pattie Björnson of Björnson Vineyard. These vines are young and only produced .6 tons in 2022, so they decided to co-ferment the grapes with 40% Pinot Noir from Bjornson Vineyard, something that is commonly done in the Jura. The wine is kept on the skins for 12 days, then aged in neutral French oak for 8 months before going to bottle. Trousseau is such an interesting grape, it is light in color and firm in structure, much like Nebbiolo. The aromatics are floral with pretty red fruits, more blossom aromatics and rich in nectar. The wine is supple on the entry with ripe red and blue fruits, along with stone fruits. The tannins come in the mid palate and bring structure and definition to the wine, along with some light astringency on the finish.
60% Trousseau, 40% Pinot Noir
ABV: 13.3%
