Herdade Do Rocim 'Mariana' Rose 2023 (Alentejano, Portugal)
The name for this wine was inspired by the heroine of a 17th century love story, a nun named Mariana Alcoforado who fell for a French soldier, the Marquis of Chamilly. The couple's romance became famous when their love letters were later published, inspiring more than just whimsical rosé tributes we're sure.
The grapes, Touriga Nacional and Aragonez (aka Tempranillo) are organically grown and hand-harvested, then fermented with wild yeasts and bottled with minimal fining. All of which is to say, there's care and complexity here. The palate is weighty with earth and minerality, alongside tangy red fruits. A seafood friendly salinity (it is from Portugal) and stony finish make it great with an array of food.
Food Ideas: boquerones on white bean toast, deviled eggs, fried calamari w/lemon aioli, shrimp in roasted tomato broth, summer mixed grills
