Perrini Primitivo Salento 2022 (Puglia, Italy)
The Perrini Family has been growing grapes and making wine in the southernmost part of Italy’s heel, known as the Salento Peninsula, for generations. For years they sold off their fruit to négociants, as the dream of producing their own estate-bottled wine was too expensive. That all changed in the 1990s when Vito Perrini and his sister Mila took over the estate, and the two began to convert their 50 hectares to organic viticulture and constructed an underground cellar, a rarity in Puglia even today. Wanting to produce wines that are distinct from the region’s generally big, burly, high-alcohol reds, they employ methods such as hand-harvesting, native-yeast fermentation, and stainless steel aging to craft Puglian wines that are balanced, fresh, and elegant.
This Primitivo is bursting with notes or crushed berries and juicy plum balanced by savory herbs and earthy black pepper. A playful, well-tempered acidity and supple tannins provide great structure and complexity.
Food Ideas: Spaghetti all’Assassina, steamed mussels with tomatoes & chorizo, herby spiced lamb meatballs, Korean beef bulgogi
