Avondale 'Jonty's Ducks' Pekin Red 2018 (Paarl, South Africa)
Avondale is a family owned farm helmed by Jonathan “Jonty” Grieve. Operating under the mantra Terra est Vita, or “soil is life,” the farm is dedicated to making natural, low intervention wines without the use of harmful chemicals. To combat the slew of vine-destroying snails that arrive in spring and early summer, Jonty forgoes pesticides in lieu of a much cuter solution- his posse of Pekin ducks, who just so happen to love frolicking through the vineyards eating snails!
The aptly named “Pekin Red” is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec & Petit Verdot. Lots of black currant and herbs meet just a hint of ground coffee on the palate. A pleasant acidity and smooth tannins round out the finish and make for a delightful medium-bodied red.
