Babylonstoren 'Soetmelksvlei' Red Blend 2020 (Paarl, South Africa)
Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
The Babylonstoren farms property in the Franschhoek wine valley is truly enviable: a working farm and hospitality center since the 17th century, the property boasts restaurants, a hotel, a bakery and farm shop, even a spa! This is all in addition to hectares of orchards, wheat fields, a rice paddy, and of course, vineyards, which sit on granite- and shale-rich soil. With that said, it’s not hard to see why they named this wine Soetmelksvlei, which is Afrikaans for “sweet milk pond” or more loosely, “land of milk and honey”.
This old vine Bordeaux blend shows a pleasant gravelly minerality, voluptuous leather and tannins from 18 months in oak, and notes of ripe plum, black currant, cinnamon. Truly a wine that embodies hospitality and abundance!
Food: duck carnitas, sloppy joes, beef rendang, celeriac shawarma, Cambodian fish amok
Alcohol: 14%
