Compañón Arrieta 'Herrigoia Tinto' 2024 (Rioja, Spain)
Gorka and Itxaso are the two winemakers at the helm of Compañón Arrieta. Their small 4 hectare estate is made up of organically farmed vines that have been in their family for three generations, but it wasn’t until 2010 that they finally began bottling their own wines under. In Basque, herri means town and goia means up, roughly translating to ‘uptown,’ referring to their higher elevation vines which result in fresh wines with great acidity.
This blend of 80-90% Tempranillo and 10-20% Malvasia and Viura is a lighter style than you might expect from Rioja, with notes of juicy berries, dark plum, and red currants punctuated by earthy spices. Fine tannins provide good structure and body, while a bright acidity keeps you going back for another sip.
Food Ideas: Lamb Biryani, bacon cheeseburgers, wild mushroom stew, mussels with chorizo, peppery steak & shishito stir-fry
ABV: 14.1%
