Oriol's 2024 Thanksgiving 3-Pack
I don’t know about y’all, but I find myself craving simplicity. As each year brings mounting heartbreak and despair—increasingly demanding our hypervigilance and intentionality—all I wanna do come holiday-food-and-booze time is switch my brain into smooth mode and float down a lazy river of crisp, red glou juice. To the rescue I gallop with banger after banger after banger of chillable Italian reds. With smooth, nigh-effervescent tannins that are (imo) ready-to-party, these wines are delicious on their own AND guaranteed to quickly best-befriend any foods you can throw at them.
Monte Tondo Corvina del Veneto 2022 (Veneto, Italy) is a longtime shop favorite, crisp red plums with a vegetal luster to balance its bright and vivacious acidity. Vibes of freshly split pomegranate; shooting dice at recess; rosy cheeks after a brisk run.
Cantine Madaudo 'Barone di Bernaj' Frappato Terre Siciliane 2022 (Sicily, Italy) is a shorttime shop favorite only because it’s relatively new on our radar. Fresh with tart raspberries and strawberries and a charmingly rakish streak of crunchy dark rocks. Vibes of grilling in vintage americana/jorts; crushed velvet; a noir femme fatale but she’s a raspberry.
Another staff stalwart is Il Palazzino Rosso 2020 (Tuscany, Italy) – if you’re gonna save one of these for bird/pies, make it this one. Similar brightness to the previous two, but with more pronounced tannins and notes of leather and spice to accommodate heartier fare. If, unlike me, your palate isn’t totally desensitized to tannin, you can give this one 15-20 minutes of air to really shine. Vibes of innocence lost; unbuckling a really nice belt after a good meal; Patrick Swayze.
