Volpetti 'Le Piantate' Cesanese 2021 (Lazio, Italy)
The Volpetti estate, situated between ancient volcanic crater lakes 17 miles south of Rome, has dedicated itself since the beginning to highlighting grapes indigenous to the Lazio region. Cesanese, a late ripening, dark purple grape has been cultivated in this area since the Roman Empire!
The mineral-rich soil here, as well as the use of neutral Slovenian oak barrels, gives this red an earthy, gamey palate, with the tannins softened just enough to preserve its lovely texture. We get spiced plums and ripe red berries, with a chewy, mouth-filling finish.
Food Ideas: wild boar sausage, shaved jamon and machego bocadillo, skewered, grilled veggies w/pesto, braised escarole in bagna cauda
